CHAPTER 13

Minnow went to check on Marc and the fitness center. He was tired, hungry, and crabby when she walked through the door. She ducked the flying wrench and chastised him for damaging the wall behind her.

"Did you miss me, baby?" she yelled across the room.

"Yeah, but only because you took the damn car! You might have asked," he replied acidly.

"Hmm... You must have missed that part of our conversation this morning."

"I'd prefer to have missed the whole morning, especially you!" he grumbled.

"But, Marc, look at the machines." Minnow applauded at the mess of parts still strung out around the equipment.

"Well, at least they no longer sound like a coffee grinder trying to crush walnuts in the shell," he huffed.

"From here it doesn't look like they make any sound at all. Or motion."

"Oh, they make motion. Stand still and I'll prove it," he snapped as he picked up a piece from one of the machines he was working on.

Minnow put her hands on her hips. "Why didn't you just tell me you needed my help?"

He snorted. "And risk having to spend the day with you? Uh, uh. I'd rather get my fingers pinched and blistered trying to do this myself."

"Trying is the operative word," Min replied as she looked skeptically at the parts. "Did you look at the instruction manual? Marc, one of these days you're going to show that no hand gesture to one of the church ladies. Don't expect me to run interference for you. I've seen some of them and I'm pretty sure they can take you," she scoffed.

"Oh, shut up and give me a hand."

Min applauded once again and sidestepped another tool. She picked it up and gave it a doubtful look. "A hammer?"

"That's the last step in the instruction manual," he retorted as he ran his hand through his hair in frustration. He'd done it so many times some of it stood straight up, so she walked over and patted it down. He grabbed her hand and pushed it away like she was contaminated.

"Okay, if you want to be seen in public looking like a former child actor with the cute cowlick that's no longer cute..."

"What does that mean?"

"We're going to eat at Francine's, then we're going to the B & B for a blast of a nightcap, so I'll be ready to help you finish putting this mess together tomorrow."

"Fine, but you're paying for supper," he griped.

Minnow reached down and yanked him to his feet. Marc kicked some of the parts out of his way. "Thanks, Thin Mint. Your surprising strength would have been helpful today. You could have held up the equipment while I worked on it. No, come to think of it, that would have been a reckless and foolish decision only made by a man with a death wish... because you'd drop it to scratch your armpit."

"Go wash your hands because the whole dirty former child actor with a cowlick isn't working for you either," she said, ignoring his taunts. "I'll be waiting for you in the car.
